Fremantle Dockers are one of only two Western Australian teams in the AFL, alongside the West Coast Eagles. Fremantle Dockers joined the league in 1995 and play their home games at the new Optus Stadium in Perth, with their training headquarters located at Cockburn ARC. The club celebrated its 25th year in the AFL in 2019.

The Dockers' best years took place between 2013 and 2015, where they earned three-straight top-four finishes to go with their only grand final appearance in 2013, and their only minor premiership, in 2015.

In 2006, whilst battling St Kilda in Launceston, Fremantle played a controversial Round 5 match that initially ended in a draw. However, the AFL overturned the draw result after the match, due to an off-field error made by the timekeepers not sounding the siren for long enough, declaring Fremantle the winners, by one point. It marked the first time a game result had been overturned since 1900.
